(NYT40) NEW YORK -- Oct. 1, 2003 -- PEN-EXHIBIT-2 -- Writers write with them and designers design with them but neither profession has paid much attention to the evolution of pens and pencils. Now comes "Design in Hand: The Evolution of Writing Instruments Since 1784,'' an exhibition opening Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, at the Providence Art Club in Providence, R.I. The exhibition, with some 300 items cleverly deployed along a time line, runs through Nov. 2, accompanied by a show of pen drawings and a sale of pens of interest to collectors, on Oct. 18.
