(NYT42) ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Sept. 19, 2003 -- RELIGION-COLUMN-2 -- Nearly half of Jews surveyed by the National Opinion Research Center from 1996 to 2002 said they attended synagogue once a year or never. For Rosh Hashana, the beginning of Jewish Year 5764 and the start of 10 days of reflection culminating with Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, Rabbi Joseph Black of Albuquerque, N.M., expects a sanctuary filled with about 1,300 people.
