(NYT49) NEW YORK -- March 11, 2003 -- NY-SERIAL-KILLINGS -- Each of the victims was shot, at point-blank range, by a gunman who is still at large, and whose only motive, investigators say, seems to be murder. They left behind disbelieving wives, speechless mothers, uncomprehending children. They died at or near their workplaces in Brooklyn and Queens, in a string of early-morning shootings. They were protected only, if at all, by security cameras. The deaths, in their senseless, stark violence, bring to mind last year's sniper attacks in the Washington area, although these recent crimes were committed by someone just a few feet -- not more than 100 hundreds of yards -- from the victims. Albert Kotlyar was shot March 10 at a coin laundry in Bedford-Stuyvesant. Police outside the coin laundry in Brooklyn on Monday. (Aaron Lee Fineman/The New York Times)
