(NYT35) LORMAN, Miss. -- March 11, 2003 -- MISS-COLLEGE-RUSSIANS -- Alcorn State University, a tiny, historically black campus tucked away in the lush green isolation of southwestern Mississippi, is home to a thriving pod of students from Russia. Alcorn's president looks at his Russian students and sees hope for the kind of racial diversity that he has long desired for Alcorn. Eugenia Merculova, 22, from Russia, right, joins her fraternity brother Wayne Wall for a quick chat in the cafeteria on March 7, 2003. Merculova joined a sorority at Alcorn State University as a way to meet more American students. (Jaclyn McCabe/The New York Times) *LITE
