(NYT22) NEW YORK -- March 13, 2003 -- NY-CAROUSEL -- Over nearly two decades, Jane Walentas has toiled to return a historic 1922 wooden carousel to its past splendor. Once finished, she planned on donating it to the city, where it would sit on a corner a park in Brooklyn on the banks of the East River, nestled between the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges. Unfortunately, the city may not want it. One of the pieces under restoration in Brooklyn on Feb. 28, 2003. (Nancy Siesel/The New York Times)
