(NYT11) NEW YORK -- March 10, 2003 -- SONDHEIM-NIGHT-MUSIC-2 -- Composer Stephen Sondheim who turns 73 on March 22, had seen his life, or a large portion thereof, pass before him last year, as a festival of his work was presented at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington. One of the shows was "A Little Night Music'' (with a different cast). For Sondheim, who is known for the irony and the intricacy of his music and lyrics, "Night Music'' is something of an anomaly. Lighter in spirit than most of his musicals, it is a show, he said, "about flirtation, the wasting of time and the manipulation of people.'' From left, Marc Kudisch, Juliet Stevenson and Jeremy Irons in a scene from "A Little Night Music,'' at the New York State Theater on March 7, 2003. (Sara Krulwich/The New York Times)
