(NYT38) NEW YORK -- March 7, 2003 -- BUKHARAN-DOMESTIC-VIOLENCE-4 -- With the breakup of the Soviet Union, Bukharan Jews started streaming to New York from Central Asian lands and formed a thriving colony in the communities of Forest Hills, Rego Park and Kew Gardens in Queens. In recent years they have been grappling with a demon that seems to have slipped in with the baggage they brought over. In the lands where they are from, Bukharan Jews lived among patriarchal societies where the husband ruled the household and sometimes enforced his will with a raised hand. Bukharan community leaders like Boris Kandov, left, and Lana Levtin are waging a fight against domestic violence. Kandov and Levtin at a restaurant in Queens on March 4, 2003.
