The New York Times Agency May 2010
(NYT88) ISLANDIA, N.Y. -- Sept. 17, 2003 -- NYSE-COMPENSATION -- When the furor burst over his $140 million payout, Richard A. Grasso, the chairman of the New York Stock Exchange, professed to be somewhat mystified by the intensity of the reaction and vigorously defended his compensation. But as a former director of a company also accused of overpaying its executives, Grasso would seem to have had ample experience with just how angry investors and shareholder activists can get when they think management has gotten too greedy. And for Grasso, being the executive of a regulatory agency only made it worse. Charles B. Wang, Computer Associates International's founder and amply paid chief executive, eventually resigned because of a similar claim that was raised when Grasso was a member of the board. Wang at the company's headquarters in Islandia, N.Y. in 2000. (Maxine Hicks/The New York Times)
