(NYT17) SYDNEY, Australia -- Sept. 8, 2003 -- HAMBURG-YOUNG -- Simone Young with Kosky in a friend's apartment in Sydney. Hamburg State Opera has appointed Sydney's own Simone Young as its music and artistic director starting 2005. Young becomes the first woman to hold such a leading position at a European house and one of the first conductors to be given both artistic and administrative responsibility.
