(NYT18) RAMDEVRA, India -- Sept. 7, 2003 -- INDIA-PILGRIMS -- Each summer, two million people make a similar pilgrimage to the town of Ramdevra, India, in the Thar Desert, not far from where India conducted its 1998 nuclear tests, to pray to Ramdev, a 15th-century Rajput warrior and social reformer who has become a saint, even a god, to the rural masses of western India. Pani Bai, stops to touch the ground as she approaches Ramdevra, Aug. 23, 2003, after walking almost 300 miles from her home in southern Rajasthan to pray for her daughter's recovery from a tumor. The shoes next to her have been discarded by pilgrims in an act of renunciation. (Amy Waldman/The New York Times)
