(NYT34) CHATSWORTH, England -- Sept. 5, 2003 -- ENGLAND-DUCHESS -- People here in rural Derbyshire address Deborah, the Duchess of Devonshire, 83, as "your grace,'' but she assigns herself less exalted status. Through her 62-year marriage to Andrew Cavendish, the 11th Duke of Devonshire, also 83, she has claim on places with "castle'' and "abbey'' in their names, but this one, Chatsworth, her favorite, is simply "the house.'' With its stately amber-colored facade and its rooms full of great art and period furniture, it is one of England's finest country houses. The Duchess of Devonshire in the gardens of her home, Chatsworth on June 27, 2003. (Jonathan Player/The New York Times)
