(NYT23) HOLIDAY, Fla. -- Sept. 22, 2003 -- IRAQ-SOLDIER-8 -- Sgt. First Class Paul Ray Smith died during a battle outside the airport near Baghdad in early April. The computer, which Smith used to write messages while serving in Iraq, were among the belongings the military sent back home to his Holiday, Fla. home. On Sept. 11, 2003, his wife, Birgit, opens a letter on the computer in their Holiday, Fla. home, that Smith was composing to his parents before he died. (Richard Perry/The New York Times)
