(NYT12) NEW YORK -- Sept. 20, 2003 -- NY-DALAI-LAMA -- A crowd of followers of the Dalai Lama wait and pray outside The Mark Hotel on East 77th Street in Manhattan, Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003, waiting for a glimpse of the spiritual leader. The Dalai Lama is on the last stop of a U.S. tour that has highlighted his dual roles as Buddhist avatar and head of state. In the last 13 days, he has met with Tibetan exiles in several cities, dedicated an interfaith temple in Bloomington, Ind., and pressed the Tibetan cause in Washington.
