(NYT1) NOBLESVILLE, Ind. -- Aug. 23, 2003 -- COLL-ACADEMIC-CUTS -- At many public universities, which are grappling with record budget cuts and record enrollments at the same time, the classroom is no longer being spared. After whittling away at staff, coaxing faculty members to juggle more classes, stripping sports teams and trusting aging roofs to hold out a few years longer, the universities have begun chopping away at academics, making it harder for students to graduate on time. Andrew M. Fields lost his track team and hopes for a scholarship. Fields at work at Sagamore Golf Club in Noblesville, Ind., in August, hopes to raise money for college.
