(NYT10) CRAWFORD, Texas -- Aug. 16, 2002 -- Adv. for Sun., Aug. 18 -- PRESIDENTIAL-AUTOS-2 -- The first presidential motorcade took place a century ago, when Theodore Roosevelt rode through Hartford, Conn., in a Columbia Electric automobile. Over the century, a lot of presidents have had an impact on the automobile and the automobile has had an impact of them. For example, Herbert Hoover came under withering criticism for appearing in a big black Cadillac during the Depression, but the most famous presidential limousine of all was X-100, the one John F. Kennedy was riding in on Nov. 22, 1963. President Bush in his Ford pickup this month at his Crawford, Texas, ranch. (Eric Draper/The White House/The New York Times)
