(NYT7) DENVER, Colo. -- Aug. 29, 2002 -- SUMMER-DRIVING-HOME-3 -- Recently, Mike Goggin, 21, folded his 6-foot-3-inch frame into a 1990 Volkswagen Golf crammed with his worldly possessions and headed out of Denver in the final leg of his cross-country journey, from Boston to tiny Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colo. Like many of the estimated six million young Americans heading to a college campus in the coming days and weeks, Goggin was on a road trip that's as much emotional as physical. Goggin was embarking on a coming-of-age ritual that is as much a part of late summer as the gradual turning of the leaves. Goggin at a rest stop in Denver, Colo., in August.
