(NYT6) UNDATED -- Aug. 31, 2002 -- LONG-BETS-TEXT-REVIEW -- The Web site Longbets.org urges an extended view of wagering. Designed to sharpen long-term thinking on issues of social or scientific significance, the nonprofit site, solicits prophecy backed by currency. An example of a bet on the site would be that "at least one human alive in the year 2000 will still be alive in 2150." Bets are tax deductible and winnings go to a charity of the victor's choice. Playing the electronic slots is a short term way to gamble compared to some of the bets on Longbets.org. (Andrea Mohin/The New York Times)
