(NYT4) NEW YORK -- Aug. 31, 2002 -- OBIT-HAMPTON -- Lionel Hampton, whose flamboyant mastery of the vibraphone made him one of the leading figures of the swing era, died Saturday morning at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Manhattan. He was 94. The cause was complications of old age and a recent heart attack. Hampton playing his signature instrument, the vibraphone, at the Blue note in Manhattan in 1997.
