(NYT27) ROSTOCK, Germany -- Aug. 19, 2002 -- GERMANY-COMMUNISTS -- In Rostock, the poorest state in the former East Germany, supporters of the reformed Communist party, the Party of Democratic Socialism, feel more faceless than usual. Their most charismatic national politician and party leader, Gregor Gysi, abruptly resigned late last month in a bizarre scandal over the personal use of frequent-flier miles earned on the job. The party sold the witty Gysi hard as an antidote to its old reputation as the dour, doctrinaire Communists who built the Berlin Wall. Now, the former Communists' plans to go national seem dreamlike. An advertisement for the local beer partly covers decaying cargo handling equipment at Rostock's harbor during a local festival. (Otto Pohl/The New York Times)
