(NYT29) UNDATED -- Aug. 14, 2002 -- VIVENDI-2 -- Vivendi Universal announced an unexpectedly large loss on Wednesday and indicated that the company would begin unwinding the media empire assembled by its recently ousted chief executive, Jean-Marie Messier. Jean-Rene Fourtou, the new chief of Vivendi, indicated he might sell the American book publisher Houghton Mifflin and other assets acquired by his predecessor. H. A. Rey's children's book "Curious George,'' is published by Houghton Mifflin. (Naum Kazhdan/The New York Times)
