(NYT210) NEW YORK -- Aug. 9, 2002 -- 9-11-WTC-10 -- As the sun crossed the equator into the Northern Hemisphere, marking the vernal equinox, the first day of spring, when night and day are of equal length, a crowd at the fountain in the World Trade Center Plaza tried to stand raw eggs on end, in the belief that doing so would bring good luck, as an ancient Chinese custom holds. In the background, "The Sphere," a 27-foot-high bronze sculpture by Fritz Koenig that was a focal point of the large plaza in the middle of the World Trade Center. (Marilynn K.
