(NYT7) NEW YORK -- July 5, 2002 -- OBIT-WILLIAMS-7-B&W -- Ted Williams hits his 2,000th career hit on Aug. 11, 1955 in the first inning against the New York Yankees at the stadium in the Bronx. Catching was Yogi Berra. Williams, the Boston Red Sox revered and sometimes reviled "Splendid Splinter" and baseball's last .400 hitter, died Friday July 5, 2002 at age 83. (Patrick A.
