(NYT22) COCOA, Fla. -- Feb. 15, 2003 -- SHUTTLE-FAMILIES -- Wives, husbands, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters and children left behind by the Columbia disaster have spent the last two weeks moving in two worlds. One is defined by nationally televised memorial services to the dead, piles of cards arriving in the mail and hundreds of calls from journalist. But the other world, the private world, is wildly different. Capt. David M. Brown's former girlfriend, Ann Micklos, is a NASA airframe engineer who was assigned to the Columbia shuttle. in the surreal and swirling days after the shuttle broke apart, Micklos often played the role of a wife. Shortly after the ground crew lost contact, she called his parents in Virginia; she addressed a crowd of distraught NASA employees gathered on the landing strip in Florida and shared what Brown had told her to say in the event of catastrophe.
