(NYT9) TUCSON, Ariz. -- Feb. 18, 2003 -- ARAB-AMERICAN-WRITERS -- A group of Arab-American writers have emerged as a result of the ethnic identity movements of the past decades. They are experiencing a special urgency now in the wake of the terrorist attacks, the continuing conflicts between Israelis and Palestinians, the possibility of war with Iraq, and what they see as the widespread labeling of Arab-Americans as terrorists. Coming in May from Beacon Press is "West of the Jordan," a novel by Jordanian-American writer Laila Halaby. Halaby in her Tucson, Ariz. home, Feb. 12, 2003. (Chris Richards/The New York Times)
