(NYT30) GALVESTON, Texas -- Feb. 12, 2003 -- HOLBROOK-TWAIN -- Before taking the stage in Galveston, Texas, at the Grand 1894 Opera House, 78-year-old Hal Holbrook turns himself again and again into 70-year-old Mark Twain. It doesn't take him so long anymore, two and a half hours instead of four. After all, he no longer has to pencil in the wrinkles. It is one of theater history's more remarkable feats of longevity that Holbrook is approaching half a century of performances with his now-legendary channeling act, "Mark Twain Tonight!" Amazingly, he still does it a couple of dozen times a year, though never the exact same show twice, in cities as large as San Diego and Denver (where he recently sold out the 2,800-seat Buell Theater) and as small as Kalamazoo, Mich., and Peekskill, N.Y. Holbrook in his dressing room, Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003 at the Grand 1894 Opera House, and on stage, right. (Michael Stravato/The New York Times)
