(NYT21) CLEAR LAKE, Texas -- Feb. 2, 2003 -- SHUTTLE-TEXAS-REACT-5 -- A choir member, center, cries at Grace Community Church in Clear Lake, Texas, Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, during services in memory of the space shuttle Columbia crew and fellow parishioners commander Rick D. Husband -- one of the choir's singers -- and fellow astronaut Michael P. Anderson. About 2,000 people filled Grace Community Church, a 10-minute drive from the Houston Space Center, for the services. For many residents the shuttle disaster on Saturday, Feb. 1, reopened wounds from 17 years ago, when the shuttle Challenger exploded 73 seconds after takeoff. They also expressed fear for the future of the space program. (Michael Stravato/The New York Times)
