(NYT23) SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Jan. 19, 2003 -- MILITARY-SHIPPING -- If President Bush orders an attack on Iraq, more than 95 percent of the fuel, ammunition and materiel in the fight would flow into the Persian Gulf region by ship, military logistics experts say. As port handlers in Savannah, Ga., loaded Army battle tanks and other equipment last week aboard ships bound for the gulf, and seven other vessels docked in Kuwait to disgorge armor and supplies for thousands of Marines and soldiers, the top Navy officer, Vice Adm. David L. Brewer III, the head of the United States Navy's Military Sealift Command, responsible for the sealift said his civilian-staffed fleet was ready to gear up. Brewer on the loading ramp leading onto the U.S. Navy vessel Mendonca at the Ocean Terminal of the Georgia Port Authority in Savannah, Ga.
