(NYT4) SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. -- Jan. 10, 2003 -- Adv. for Sun. Jan. 12 -- AUTOS-WOMEN -- Acknowledging the importance of women in the marketplace, automakers have long been rethinking how they design vehicles. Many cars displayed this week at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, for example, are marketed to appeal to women. But automakers' efforts to raise the number of dealers who are women have proved inadequate. Elsie MacMillan financed her purchase of a Toyota car dealership through a dealer development program. Most women acquire dealerships through inheritance. MacMillan at her dealership on Jan. 9, 2003. (Chris Richards/The New York Times)
