(NYT25) DRESDEN, Germany -- Feb. 16, 2003 -- DRESDEN-ART-SALVAGE-3 -- In theory, a disaster averted should leave few traces. Yet six months after the dramatic rescue of Dresden's art treasures from incalculable flood damage, the mood in Dresden's leading museums is sour. Heralded for their heroic salvage effort, museum administrators and curators are now complaining that Saxony's regional government has refused to provide them with a safe place to store their art. Unsurprisingly, money is at the heart of this dispute. Germany is going through a prolonged economic crisis, with cultural budgets being trimmed nationwide. The immediate result of this standoff can be seen as renaissance sculptures rescued from the flooded basement of Albertinum in Dresden are now crowded into the museum's main sculpture hall for lack of adequate storage space, as seen on Feb. 11, 2003.
