(NYT19) NEW ORLEANS -- March 2, 2003 -- MARDIGRAS-FLAMBEAU-2 -- The flambeau carriers in New Orleans are a tradition almost as old as Carnival itself, doing a dangerous form of manual labor that, over generations, has become a form of entertainment, if not an art form. Once the only illumination for the elegant night parades of Carnival, the flambeau carriers circled the mule-drawn floats with fire and smoke as mythical papier-mache gods and monsters took on a glimmering life on dark streets. The bearers do not just walk, they put on a show within the show, like the Temptations with a big box of matches. They groove and gyrate to the music, and spin their flambeaux in a kind of controlled chaos. Louis Lazard, 25, is the grandson of Frank Lazard, 80, the patriarch of the flambeau tradition.
