(NYT30) NEW YORK -- March 2, 2003 -- MCDONALDS-CRISIS -- McDonald's, which has long symbolized to some people the American way of eating the way that General Motors once represented the open road, is struggling with an identity crisis. While it is still the nation's most-visited fast- food chain _ more than 20 million people eat at McDonald's in the United States every day _ the company is facing a decline in its portion of the fast-food market and in the estimation of many of its customers, multiple surveys say.
