(NYT26) NEW YORK -- March 2, 2003 -- NY-STOLEN-DALI -- There have been enough forgeries of Salvador Dali's work to fill a book, scare off scholars and inspire one New Yorker to devote a substantial part of his life to sorting the real Dalis from the fakes. Salvador Dali took two hours to do a rendition of the Crucifixion, which hung at Rikers Island for years. It was reported as missing on Saturday, March 1, 2003. Dali's rendition of the Crucifixion, at Riker's Island, N.Y., on March 13, 2001. (Angel Franco/The New York Times)
