(NYT37) NEW YORK -- Feb. 16, 2003 -- NY-HAT-HAIR -- Sure, the brutality of winter could be measured in degrees on a thermometer, inches of snowfall or number of ice-induced traffic accidents. But winter can also be judged by the prominence of another scourge, one that is especially irksome in a city that places a premium on being well-groomed and immaculately coiffed: hat hair. Erin Fallon, a photographer, top, shows her "hat hair", while waiting for a table at the Blue Ribbon Bakery in Manhaattan. Seth J. Cohen, 31, center, a bartender, has never had "hat hair" because he cuts his hair close. But he wears at hat because it's cold. Suzanne E. Cohen, below, 32, outside Cowgirls resturant in the Village in Manhattan shows off her hat hair. (Michelle V. Agins/The New York Times)
