(NYT18) ALTA, Utah -- Feb. 15, 2003 -- UTAH-UNTOUCHED-TOWN -- Bill Levitt, mayor of Alta, Utah, for 33 years, strides through his small town to his office to attend a town budget meeting in Alta, Jan. 30, 2003. In 33 years in office, Levitt has preserved Alta from the commercialism of other ski areas and kept the world at bay. There are no high-rises here, and almost no condominiums. What bars there are, in the town's five simple lodges, close by 11 p.m.; the only noise in the starry nights comes from the guns shooting down avalanches. When the lift lines get too long, the operators slow down the chairs to keep the 2,200 acres of ski slopes from becoming too crowded. (Ruth Fremson/The New York Times)
