(NYT10) SULAYMANIYAH, Iraq -- Feb. 9, 2003 -- IRAQ-KURDS-FUNERALS-3 -- The grave of senior Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) leader Gen. Shawkat Haji Mushir, a member of the political leadership of the party which controls the eastern section of the Kurdish autonomous region of northeast Iraq, lies covered to protect it from rain, following his funeral at Girdi Salim Bag cemetary in Sulaymaniyah, Iraq, Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003. The grave will remain covered until a gravestone is put into place. Gunmen posing as defectors from an Islamic extremist group killed Mushir and two other Kurdish officials Saturday night, Feb. 8. Kurdish officials blamed the Ansar al-Islam organization for the attack, which the PUK says has ties to the al-Qaida network, and was singled out by U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell as a terrorist-linked organization during his appearance before the U.N.
