(NYT32) LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Jan. 24, 2003 -- CALIF-CAT-CLAWING -- The West Hollywood City Council, which has already pronounced its opposition to apartheid, war in Iraq and the USA Patriot Act, is now turning its progressive eye to banning what it calls the barbaric practice of declawing cats. The Council this week ordered the city attorney to study the legality of such a ban, which if enacted would be the first of its kind in the nation. The prohibition would apply to the three practicing veterinary offices in West Hollywood, an enclave of 36,000 surrounded by what it considers the socially more retrograde Los Angeles and Beverly Hills. Dr. Jennifer Conrad DVM, director of The Paw Project in Los Angeles, which is working to pass the legislation holds a cat's paw to show it's claws, Friday, Jan. 24, 2003. The last joint on the claw is amputated when a cat is declawed. (Monica Almeida/The New York Times) *LITE
