(NYT18) NEW YORK -- Jan. 16, 2003 -- Adv. for Sun., Jan. 19 -- MUSIC-MIDORI-2 -- It was a concert by the New York Philharmonic to usher in the year 1983, with a presentation of soloists who had performed in Young People's Concerts. Midori, then 11, played the big first movement of Paganini's Violin Concerto No. 1, some 23 minutes of hair-raising acrobatics. The critics were variously impressed. Now 31, Midori looks back at that event with ambivalence. On one hand, she acknowledges it as the beginning of her public career. On the other, she has made it clear that the whole "prodigy'' thing is getting old. Still, she and her managers have organized her present concert season around commemorations of the event. Midori, 14, in New York on July 28, 1986. (Sara Krulwich/The New York Times)
