(NYT34) INDRAJAYA, Indonesia -- Jan. 14, 2003 -- INDO-PEACE -- Children were playing outside again, street vendors were selling their wares and couples were strolling on the rutted walkways, simple pleasures that perhaps spell some return of normalcy to Aceh, the northern Indonesian province torn apart by conflict for nearly 30 years. The first blush of peace in this city is particularly welcome to residents who have missed using the central park that had long been inaccessible, a place too dangerous to frequent for fear of ambush by soldiers or extortion by guerrillas. Muhammad Ali, left, his wife, Nurlaila, and their 6-month-old son outside their home in Indrajaya, Indonesia. Ali said that he had run away after the army came looking for him as a suspected rebel, and that his wife ran away later. (Jane Perlez/The New York Times)
