(NYT6) NEW YORK -- Jan. 13, 2003 -- AOL-TIMEWARNER -- Steven M. Case, chief executive of America Online, with tie, and Gerald M. Levin, chief executive of Time Warner, announcing their company's plans to merge in January, 2000. Case announced his resignation as chairman of AOL Time Warner on Sunday. When AOL Time Warner joined the media industry's major leagues in 2001, the America Online Internet unit was expected to become the company's superstar cleanup hitter, elevating a lineup of middling media journeymen like the Warner Brothers film studio and the Time Inc. magazine empire.
