(NYT14) SHINERWE MOUNTAIN, Iraq -- Jan. 12, 2003 -- IRAQ-KURDS -- Fighters for Ansar al-Islam, a group of militants, have taken control of a small corner of Kurdish-controlled Iraq and established harsh Islamic order over a wild, isolated land. On one side of the lines a secular government rules. On the other, women must wear veils and men must wear beards. Music, alcohol, television and dancing are banned. Ansar's defectors say that men must assemble in mosques for prayer five times each day and that shops cannot display products with labels bearing images of women. Beyara village, where the militant Ansar al-Islam is based, is seen through a hole in a Kurdish bunker on Shinerwe Mountain, Jan. 7, 2003. The white building on the left is said to be Ansar headquarters. (Chang W. Lee/The New York Times)
