(NYT13) KAUAI, Hawaii -- Jan. 8, 2003 -- Adv. for Sun., Jan. 12 -- TRAVEL-KAUAI-3 -- In geological terms, the island of Kauai in Hawaii is a youthful five million years old. The island's terrain includes the Na Pali coast, with dizzying cliffs and valleys so narrow they're accessible only by foot or by boat, Waimea Canyon, a mile and a half wide in places, with walls that look like richly embroidered tapestry in the late afternoon light and Mount Waialeale, one of the wettest spots on earth, receiving 400 to 600 inches of rain a year. Visitors on the Kalalau Trail, which follows the Na Pali coast in December. (Monica Almeida/The New York Times)
