(NYT38) NEW YORK -- Jan. 6, 2003 -- GAY-BOOKSTORE-CLOSING -- The Oscar Wilde Bookshop in Greenwich Village in New York, the oldest gay and lesbian bookstore in the country and one of only two left in the city, will close its doors for business by the end of the month, the end of an institution that many say was at the heart of the gay movement. The Oscar Wilde Bookshop, which opened in 1967, became a focal point of the gay rights movement. The interior of the bookstore on Monday, Jan.6, 2003. (Ruth Fremson/The New York Times)
