(NYT8) TEL AVIV, Israel -- Jan. 5, 2003 -- MIDEAST-BOMBINGS-3 -- Israeli police and investigators examine the scene of a double suicide bombing in a downtown Tel Aviv shopping area, after two Palestinian suicide bombers detonated their explosives Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003. The two attacks, which occured a block away from each other, left at least 22 dead, and dozens injured. The first such attack in Israel for six weeks came just three weeks before a general election at which security concerns will be paramount in the minds of many Israeli voters. The Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility. The Palestinian Authority denounced it as a "terrorist" attack. (Rina Castelnuovo/The New York Times)
