(NYT52) PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Feb. 23, 2003 -- RI-CLUB-FIRE-MASS-3 -- Mourners young and old comfort each other during a prayer service Sunday, Feb. 23, 2003, at St. Francis Chapel in Providence, R.I., as they mourned the victims of The Station night club fire that killed 97 people on Thursday night. The names of the victims from Thursday's inferno have only come out a handful at a time, and the sense of dread in this tiny state has grown in the aftermath the deadly nightclub fire. In the smallest state in the nation, everyone seems to know everyone else. The connections are deep to the 96 concertgoers who perished. Rhode Island is only 1,214 square miles, measuring 48 miles long and 37 miles wide. (Nicole Bengiveno/The New York Times)
