(NYT28) NEW YORK -- Feb. 03, 2003 -- FASHION-OUTLOOK -- Fashion has been troubled for some time and for a variety of reasons. These include the economy; an aging population of brand-name designers; the rarely remarked failure of American fashion schools to field effective farm teams or introduce new design stars; and the reality that fewer corporations control more brands. But it may be a good time for new designers to break into the fashion world. Beth Buccini, left, and Sarah Easley, the owners of the boutique Kirna Zabete, in New York. They are shown with clothing displays on Monday, Feb. 2, 2003. (Nancy Siesel/The New York Times)
