(NYT40) NEW ORLEANS, La. -- Feb. 23, 2003 -- MARDI-GRAS-BEADS-3 -- Few things go so quickly from trinkets to treasure to trash. Mardi Gras beads, made from cheap plastic and cotton thread in Chinese factories, begin to appreciate as the first of the Carnival parades lumber through New Orleans. Crowds on balconies along the Krewe of Pontchartrain parade route to downtown New Orleans go wild for Mardi Gras beads, Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003, as spectators gathered at the parade in New Orleans, La. Parades lead up to Mardi Gras, which takes place March 4, 2003. (Ting-Li Wang/The New York Times)
