(NYT19) WASHINGTON -- Jan. 29, 2003 -- SENATE-JUDGES -- Jeffrey Sutton, left, President Bush's nominee to become U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth District, testifies on Capitol Hill Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003 before the Senate Judiciary Committee's hearing on his nomination. Sutton, a Columbus, Ohio lawyer nominated by President Bush for a federal judgeship pleaded with senators Wednesday not to hold his legal work against disability rights and civil rights against him, saying he was only arguing for his clients' views and not his personal positions. Seated next to Sutton are John Roberts, and Deborah Cook, right. (Doug Mills/The New York Times)
