(NYT52) WARWICK, R.I. -- Feb. 21, 2003 -- RI-CLUB-VOICES -- At first it seemed like nothing but the blazing beginning of a glam rock show, like so many other concerts Christopher Travis had seen. Jack Russell, the singer for Great White, belted out the opening line of "Desert Moon," and the crush of people inside The Station gyrated and screamed in headbanging delight. Two pinwheel pyrotechnics spun on either side of the stage, and two rockets shot sparks into the air. Minutes later on Thursday night, Feb. 20, 2003, the excitement gave way to panic and desperation, as the club became an inferno and the ugly stampede to the exits began. But the heat was too intense, the exits too few, the time too short. "People were just scratching and clawing, looking for a way out,'' says Travis. Travis near the club, Friday, Feb. 21.
