(NYT19) SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Jan. 1, 2003 -- CALIF-FIZZ-BOWL-3 -- The video generation met the pigskin generation Wednesday for a rare event in American sports: a football bowl game without a corporate sponsor. In Sacramento, Calif., the 38th annual Fizz Bowl, pitting the Youngs against the Olds, was played under the watchful eye of a scepter-bearing grand marshal clad in a plastic crown and a cape of ersatz ermine. "Next to the Rose Bowl, we're the oldest continual bowl game in the West,'' said Bob Sertich, 53, keeper of the Fizz Bowl flame. Players are employees past and present of Vic's Ice Cream, which has dispensed ice cream and sandwiches since 1947 to residents. The match, between the Olds and the Youngs, has its own "coin'' for the pregame toss. (Peter DaSilva/The New York Times)
