(NYT25) UNDATED -- Nov. 28, 2002 -- SACHS -- Jeffrey D. Sachs has forged a reputation as a professor who much prefers practicing and preaching to theorizing, and he brought that outlook with him when he became the director of the Earth Institute at Columbia and a professor with appointments in three of the university's schools at Columbia University. When Columbia hired Sachs, it got an economist with famous associates. Pictured at left, with Kofi Annan of the United Nations, and at right, with Pope John Paul II and the singer Bono.
